Tearful Luis Suárez Announces Uruguay Retirement

"It's a difficult day, but the time has come," Suárez said

Luis Suárez has announced his retirement from international football with Uruguay. The 35-year-old striker, who has scored 68 goals in 134 appearances for his country, made the announcement in a tearful press conference on Monday.

Suárez's Uruguay career

Suárez made his international debut for Uruguay in 2007 and quickly became one of the team's most important players. He helped Uruguay win the Copa América in 2011 and was a key member of the team that reached the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

Suárez is Uruguay's all-time leading goalscorer and has also played for clubs such as Barcelona, Liverpool and Atlético Madrid. He was named the FIFA Player of the Year in 2016.

Reasons for retirement

Suárez said that he was retiring from international football in order to focus on his club career and his family.

"It's a difficult day, but the time has come," Suárez said. "I've given everything for the national team and I'm proud of what we've achieved together."

Reaction

Suárez's retirement has been met with sadness by Uruguay fans and players alike.

"Luis is a legend of Uruguayan football," said Uruguay coach Diego Alonso. "He will be missed, but we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Suárez's former teammate, Edinson Cavani, said: "Luis is a great player and a great friend. I'm proud to have played alongside him and I wish him all the best in his retirement."
