Toronto claims Heineman off waivers from Red Sox, optioning him to Triple-A Buffalo

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed catcher Caleb Heineman off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, the team announced on Wednesday. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated catcher Zack Serven for assignment. Heineman, 27, has appeared in 89 games over parts of three seasons with the Red Sox. A left-handed hitter, Heineman has a career batting average of .215 with three home runs and 21 RBIs. He has also thrown out 19% of attempted base stealers. The Blue Jays are hoping that Heineman can provide some depth to their catching corps, which is currently led by Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk. Jansen has been dealing with a nagging back injury, while Kirk has struggled offensively this season. Heineman has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. He will likely serve as the backup catcher to Gabriel Moreno, the Blue Jays' top catching prospect. Serven, 29, has appeared in 11 games for the Blue Jays this season, batting .182 with one home run and two RBIs. He has also thrown out one of three attempted base stealers. The Blue Jays acquired Serven from the Colorado Rockies in a trade for cash considerations in March. He was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Heineman. The Blue Jays have not announced a corresponding move to their 26-man active roster. However, it is likely that Heineman will be recalled to the majors when rosters expand on September 1.
